BBC Editor Lectures on a World Hot Spot
Andrew Whitehead, top editor for Core News at BBC World Service Radio, will deliver the 2008 Graham Hovey Lecture, “An Honest Witness in Kashmir: A BBC correspondent prepares for Asia in Ann Arbor” at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 9 at Wallace House, 620 Oxford Road.
India and Pakistan’s nuclear rivalry have frequently threatened world peace. Whitehead will recount how it began, starting with the events that led India and Pakistan to the brink of war 60 years ago over the princely state of Kashmir and discuss why today Kashmir remains a disputed region. His talk draws upon the extensive research and travels that led to his recently published book, “A Mission in Kashmir.”
Whitehead has been a BBC political correspondent, covering British politics for the BBC around the world. For five years he was its Delhi correspondent, reporting for TV and radio. He is now based in London at World Service News and Current Affairs which won an unprecedented eight Sony awards, three of them “gold,” in this year's premier British radio recognition awards. He has also received two international awards for radio documentaries about contemporary India.

Named for a previous director of the Knight-Wallace Fellows program, the lecture honors alumni whose subsequent careers show the benefits of sabbatical studies at the University of Michigan. During Whitehead’s fellowship (2003-2004) his work on the origins of the Kashmir crisis resulted in his book which was published last November.
Whitehead studied history at Oxford and Warwick Universities, and is an editor of the “History Workshop Journal."
